As we approach Earth Day, I thought I’d discuss 5 simple ways to teach your kids conservation. It doesn’t have to be a difficult task, in fact, it’s quite simple for them to learn by your example. My children are sponges and learn from watching what I do. These are my favorite 5 tips on how to conserve energy and water.
Kids Conservation Tips
Turn the water off while they’re brushing their teeth
What I’ve noticed from my kids is that they enjoy turning the faucet on and off while brushing. Initially, I spent a lot of time repeating myself but I learned that a story or book is more helpful. There are plenty of books that explain this. One children’s book in particular that explains this is Why Should I Save Water? by Jen Green
Replace TV time with books, crafts or board games
This is hard to admit publicly but here goes nothing. When I am having a hard day, sometimes I let my children watch TV for an extended amount of time. It’s not something I’m proud of but I do my best to put a timer on for 30-60 minutes. On my better days, the TV goes off and we either read, play board games, or do arts and crafts.
Turn off lights in rooms that aren’t being used
For this particular tip, once again repetition is key. The earlier they learn to turn the lights off, the less you will have to remind them. Personally, I like to give them a verbal checklist after we leave any room. Simple commands like, “What do we do before we leave the bathroom?” go a long way.
Instead of disposable water bottles, aim for a refillable bottle
In my former life, I always had a 24 pack of bottled water in the refrigerator. Now my family has invested in refillable 5-gallon jugs to get our water. My kids have a designated water cup that gets reused throughout the day. That way we avoid washing numerous glasses throughout the day.
Walk with your kids to close locations instead of driving
I’m totally guilty of driving just a few blocks to Target to pick up diapers. However, if you have the opportunity to walk safely to your neighborhood store (or any other errands), make it a habit to do it with your children. It’s a healthy activity that saves a little gas and lets you get some fresh air.
